About Pamporovo resort complex

Pamporovo is the most popular and the largest ski-resort in Bulgaria. It is located in the Rhodope Mountains at 250 km to the south-east from the capital city of Sofia, at 80 km to the south of the city of Plovdiv and at 11 km to the north of the town of Smolyan.
The resort is situated at the foot of Mount Snezhanka /1926 m/. On the top of the Mount is built a 156m high Television Tower. From there a lot of ski-runs lead to the resort complex and to the lakes of Smolyan. The total length of the ski-runs is 18 km. The lifts and tow-lifts, attending to the ski-runs, have a capacity of 7000 people per hour. The climate is favourable for tourism; the average annual temperature is 8оС. There is snow-cover above 150 days annually, while the sunny days are nearly 270.
In proximity to Pamporovo are located the resort villages – Stoykite (5km), the ethnographic complex Shiroka luka (10km.), Gela (15km.), Progled (3km), Momchilovtsi (17km), which are suitable for ski- and rural tourism. At 10km to the north is located the resort town Chepelare, and at 11km to the south – the administrative centre Smolyan.

In winter in Pamporovo take place international and national competitions in ski alpine disciplines for men and women, ski running, ski orientation, biathlon and other winter sports.

For the snowboarders, particularly in free style, Pamporovo offers excellent conditions. On the ski-run Snezhanka1 the local Snowboard Society Club has built a halfpipe – about 150m long with walls 3m high.

For the ski-beginners are built several (green) ski-runs. For the advanced skiers there are several very steep (black) ski-runs. For the fans of ski-running and biathlon there are ski-runs built around Mount Snezhanka and a sport shooting ground in the Yazovira area.

You can walk all days long among the venerable spruce and beech forests. Your eyes will catch a glimpse of a running deer, the bushy tail of a squirrel or the long ears of a hare. Here are found above 200 species of birds, among which the especially rare black stork and imperial eagle. In the night you can hear an owl, and at dawn – the song of a cock of the wood. In spring the meadows are studded with wild flowers, the air is sweet with them and with many orchids. There are species which you can find only in this part of the world – the lily, the violet and the tulip of Rhodopes. The Rhodopes are a real revelation for the lovers of herb- and mushroom-gathering. Walking in the mountain, you can fill your basket with delicious edible boletus, brown ring boletus, parasol mushroom or chanterelle, as well as gather a sweet-smelling bunch of herbs.
The Rhodopes have prepared their gift for each sense – the eyes will be full of shades of colours, the ears will hear a song, the babble of mountain brooks and silver jingle of bells, the lips will drink from the crystal mountain water, running from countless fountains.
