The Ligurian people from Tigulli were the first inhabitants of this land, around the tenth-eleventh century. The legend tells that Hannibal came to these places on his way to fight the second Punic war. The history of Rapallo is marked by a deep alliance with Genoa against a few of its historical enemies: Pisa, Venice and France. The 4th July, 1549, marked a dramatic and important change in the life of the village. A bloodthirsty pirate called Dragut, a nearly legendary character in spite of the cruelty and wickedness of his men, raged in the waters of the Ligurian sea. The assault was fierce, children and women were kidnapped and released only after the payment of heavy ransoms. This episode brought to the construction of the castle on the coast.
The last historic period of Rapallo dates back to the '800s and regards its situation as an elegant tourist town. The construction of luxury hotels and princely villas makes Rapallo worthy of international attention. From then on, the Vittorio Veneto seafront has seen the passing of many famous names, actors, artists and cultured men, from Friedrich Nietzsche to Guglielmo Marconi. This latter, during the thirties, was experimenting the short-wave transmission from the yacht Elettra moored in a roadstead, the same that today is the scene of the most important sailing trophies: Prada, Sailing Week, Zegna and Corsica Trophies. The cafés on the seafront, of which a few date back to the nineteenth century, have hosted actors of Hollywood, from Clark Gable to Tyrone Power.
