Municipality Sandanski (1010 square km; 45 820 citizens) is situated in the picturesque Sandanski-Petrich valley on the middle reaches of the river Struma, including also a big part of the western and south-western slopes of the mountain of Pirin, the lowest areas in the foot of the mountains between the mountains Maleshevska and Ograzden and the northern slopes of the mountain Slavianka. The city of Sandanski ( 31 160 citizens) is historically established economic, cultural and administrative center. It is situated in the outlying south-western slopes of the mountain of Pirin, next to the outflow of the river Sandanska Bistritsa.
