Municipality Sandanski (1010 square km; 45 820 citizens) is situated in the picturesque Sandanski-Petrich valley on the middle reaches of the river Struma, including also a big part of the western and south-western slopes of the mountain of Pirin, the lowest areas in the foot of the mountains between the mountains Maleshevska and Ograzden and the northern slopes of the mountain Slavianka.
