Sandanski and the region

Sandanski is a quiet spa city of 32,000 people in the southwest corner of Bulgaria on the Bistritsa River, about an hour's drive from the golden beaches and warm blue waters of the Aegean Sea. At 224 metres above sea level, it is situated at the foothills of the 2,900-metre Pirin Mountains, most of which are protected within Pirin National Park. These granite mountains, ideal for summer hiking, are forested with Macedonian Pine, Bosnian Pine and Bulgarian Fir, and are home to almost 200 lakes and more than 1,300 plant species.

The port of Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city, is about an hour away by road. Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, lies two hours to the north by road or rail. Both cities have airports with good connections to international destinations.

Sandanski has a mild climate and boasts more sunshine hours than any other locality in Bulgaria. Its average annual temperature of 14.7C is the country's highest (mean January temperature of 2.4C and mean July temperature of 24.6C), while it has the country's lowest annual rainfall and almost no fog. Winters are mild and short (only some 10 days a year with snow cover), and the autumn long and warm. At 66 per cent, relative humidity is low, while annual sunshine duration is more than 2,500 hours.

Sandanski's climate and clean air are ideal for people with lung and bronchial conditions such as asthma and emphysema as well as upper respiratory ailments including allergies and sinusitis. People with arthritis also find relief in the Sandanski region.

Sandanski traces its history back to ancient Thrace, and tradition says that the gladiator Spartacus, legendary leader of the famous slave uprising, was born in the old Thracian settlement that had sprung up around the nearby hot mineral springs.

Sandanski is home to many spa hotels offering mineral bath treatments, said to be beneficial for skin, joint, lung and other conditions. The hotels are built near the city's more than 20 hot mineral springs, whose waters have been compared favorably to those of Baden-Baden and Vichy. They are of a nearly uniform chemical composition but contain varying quantities of metasilicic acid and fluorine. The waters are clear, colourless and odourless with a pleasant taste: silicic (containing 71 to 135 mg of metasilicic acid per litre), slightly fluoric (3.2 to 6.5 mg of fluorine per litre), hyperthermal (42 to 81C), slightly mineralised, containing sodium hydrocarbonates and sulphates, and with a pH value ranging from neutral to mildly alkaline (pH 7.2 to 8).

The combination of nearby mountains and sea, balmy climate and curative waters makes Sandanski an idyllic and compelling vacation and retirement home.
