Bulgaria AN ANCIENT CROSSROAD Bulgarian land is an ancient crossroad and remembers many a venerable civilizations write page after page of its turbulent history. Bronze and iron spears and arrows, ruins of cities and palaces, wise words carved on stones or marble pillars, written on parchment or paper, tell the wonderful tale of past millennia. The Thracians bequeathed us the famous tombs at Kazanluk and Sveshtari, and the unique gold and silver treasures of Panagyurishte and Rogozen. The Hellenes build the beautiful coastal towns of Appolonia (Sozopol), Anhialo (Aheloi), and Messambria (Nessebar); and the Romans founded ancient Aescus, Nicopolis-ad-Istrum and Nove. Huns, Goths andAvars came and went. Some time in the mid-7 century, the Slavs crossed the Danube from the North and settled on the land as far South as the Adriatic. Afew years later, the Bulgars led by Khan Asparouh took hold of what is now Northern Bulgaria, Founded the nation and gave it its name.
A COUNTRY OF IMMENSE POTENTIAL Bulgaria is situated in South-eastern Europe, in the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It has a varied relief of the High peaks and sprawling mountain ranges, large plains and deep valleys, over 500 curative mineral springs. Wild forest cover almost one-quarter of its territory. The edelweiss, a protected rare flower, grows in the high alpine areas. Bulgaria is famous for its oleaginous rose grown throughout the Kazanluk valley, also known as the Valley of Roses. Bulgaria is also a true wine country, the fifth major wine-producer in the world. Most of the eight million Bulgarians are Christians. They live together peacefully with minorities – Muslims and Jews. Eastern Orthodox monasteries and churches, and Muslims mosques preserve ancient treasures and attract thousands of visitors. Religious holidays are openly celebrated and the traditional denominations registered with the government enjoy broad freedoms. For the last 15 years, Bulgaria has been a democracy with a freely elected parliament. It became a full member of NATO in 2004 and it is extended to join the European Union in January 2007.
Sveti Vlas
AN ATTRACTIVE PLACE FOR REST
The village of Sveti (Saint) Vlas has recently grown into an attractive place for rest. It is located in the outskirts of the Balkan Mountains, on the Black Sea coast. Sveti Vlas is the place where the sea air meets the mountain one, thus forming a unique air current which cleans the atmosphere and has a profound curative effect. The local climate is strongly recommended for asthmatic conditions. The village itself occupies the northern part of a small bay, at the centre of which stretches the world famous resort of Sunny Beach, and further on south is the ancient museum town of Nessebar. Vlas is only 5 km away from Sunny Beach and 10 km to Nessebar. To the north of Vlas, 4 km. away, is another lovely resort - the holiday village of Elenite. Bourgas International Airport is 35 km. away, and Varna Airport is 100 km. to the north. The village of Vlas is quite small, with 2 500 residents, and boasts new houses, private pensions and hotels. The numerous and cosy restaurants and informal eating places offer delicious dishes of the local and European cuisine.
Black Sea
THE DEEP BLACK SEA AND ITS GREEN TREASURE In medieval times, the large bay situated between Cape Emine and Nessebar, on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast had two large fresh water springs. The locals earned a living by selling drinking water to Nessebar, which had none of its own. Northward, the long indented coastline is bordered by the spurs of the Balkan range and southward – by the heights of the Strandzha Mountain. Picturesque bays, specious sand beaches, gently washed by a warm sea, are the hallmark of the Bulgarian Southern Sea coast. The first development here started in 1958. Today, the 6 km beach, with its golden sand and safe, friendly sea known as Sunny Beach, is generally reputed as the biggest and the most popular Bulgarian beach resort. Bulgaria offers endless possibilities to those who wish to explore the land and enjoy the proverbial Bulgarian hospitality. What is most irresistible is the beautiful coastline of almost 400 kilometers. The summer, thanks to the airflows from the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, is less hot than in neighboring Turkey or Greece, with an average air and water temperature of 27 °C and 25 °C respectively. Modern civilization has comfort and luxury to the riches of nature, to create true magic in holiday villages like Sunny Beach, Sveti Vlas, Nessebar, Elenite and Sozopol. Nowadays, in the local restaurants the foreign tourists are the unique artistic atmosphere of the Strandzha fire-dances.
