Bulgaria Signs Agreement with the World Bank

On 12 June Bulgaria will sign an Agreement with the World Bank for additional funding of the project for Social investment and employment promotion. The document will be signed by the regional Vice-President of the World Bank Shigeo Katsu, Bulgarian Minister of Finance Plamen Oresharski and Minister of Labor and Social Policy Emilia Maslarova. The additional funding amounts to 15 M Euro and will target small, but socially significant infrastructure projects, municipality activities and services for socially weak people, inform from Ministry of Finance. The project for Social investment and employment promotion is being applied since April 2003 and has a start capital of 50.8M Euro. The aim of the project is to improve the living standard of people from marginalized communities: long-term unemployed people, people from ethnic minorities and vulnerable groups. The project which is implemented by the Ministry of labor and social policy and the Social Investment Fund is a proved valuable instrument for fighting poverty and securing access to external sources for the local communities. The two main components of the project are the Initiative for infrastructure development of the communities and the Bulgarian initiative “Active services on the labor market”. The achieved so far results from the project implementation include financing of more than 350 micro-projects and communities, including schools repair works, rehabilitation of energy efficiency of homes for old people and children left without parental care, water supply and sanitation of small towns etc. Nearly 500 000 people have benefited from the improvement of the social infrastructure and of the services on local level.
