Golfing in Bulgaria

Developers working in Spain and Portugal have long realized the importance of golf courses in selling projects - especially to affluent early retirees - but now their Bulgarian counterparts are getting in on the game. Ian Woosnam, the leading British golf professional, was out in the country earlier this week to advertise two new courses he has designed, one in Balchik, on the Black Sea coast, and another near the ski resort of Bansko. Construction is due to begin on both later this year. It would be an understatement to say Bulgaria cannot boast a great golfing tradition: the Communists who ran the country until 1989 frowned on such bourgeois leisure pursuits, preferring athletics and weight lifting.

Bulgarian and foreign resort investors and residential real estate developers are ready to flex their golfing muscles. With more than five new golf resort and leisure-integrated real estate developments in the pipeline, Bulgaria is in its early stage of development but has the potential of becoming an exciting new golf destination and golf real estate market.
